The Golf Dress Code, Decoded

August 4, 2026

Collared, no denim, no leggings — what private club dress codes actually require, and how to meet every rule without dressing like the pro shop mannequin.

Most club dress codes are shorter than people think. They ask for a collar or a finished neckline, a hem that lands near the knee or a skort with a built-in short, and soft-spiked or spikeless shoes. Almost everything else is a rumor passed between members.

The trouble is that meeting those rules has historically meant shopping in a pro shop, where the choices are boxy polos and a beige skort. That is the gap Fore Divas was designed to fill.

What is almost always required

  • A collar or a designed, finished neckline — our ruffle collar counts.
  • Skorts and shorts with a built-in short and a modest front length. Ours sit at 16".
  • Golf shoes that are spikeless or soft-spiked. Metal spikes are gone at nearly every club.
  • Shirts tucked or designed to be worn out with a straight, finished hem.

What is almost never allowed

  • Denim of any color.
  • Athletic leggings worn as trousers, and cropped gym tops.
  • Tank tops without a designed strap, and anything with a large external logo.
  • Sneakers on the course, even white ones.

How to dress for the rules and still look like yourself

Start with the skort. A pleated skort in blush or sage reads as intentional rather than issued, and it is the piece that carries you from the tee to a lunch table without a change.

Then take the collar seriously. A ruffle collar satisfies every code we have read while immediately signaling that you chose your outfit instead of tolerating it.

Finish with shoes you would happily wear off the course. Plain white leather with a spikeless outsole passes any starter's glance and does not look like equipment.

One outfit that works anywhere

Fairway Pleated Skort, Ruffle Collar Sleeveless Polo, Ruffle Brim Visor, Classic White Blush Golf Shoes. Compliant at every club we know of, and photographed better at lunch than on the range.
